Our Learn-to-Sail Vacation takes place in the pristine waters of Grand Traverse Bay, Michigan, based out of Traverse City. Grand Traverse Bay offers ideal sailing conditions for beginners and advanced sailors alike, with protected waters, and minimal commercial traffic. The bay’s clear, freshwater and exceptional water clarity, often exceeding 20 feet, make for a perfect learning environment, allowing students to see underwater features and gain a better sense of depth and navigation.
Each day of the Learn-to-Sail Vacation is designed to build upon the previous day’s skills while exploring the stunning waters of Northern Michigan. The trip begins with an introduction to sailing, safety procedures, and boat handling. Participants will then embark on daily sailing excursions, practicing essential skills such as sail trim, docking, navigation, and anchoring.
Sailboats will return to our home marina each evening. Students have the option to sleep aboard our comfortable cruising sailboats docked at the marina, fully immersing themselves in the marina lifestyle and the unique atmosphere of life on the water.
Throughout the week, students will refine their sailing techniques, gain confidence in various conditions, and work towards their ASA certifications. You’ll also have time to unwind and explore Traverse City, with its unique coastal charm, local dining, wineries, and lively culture just a short distance away.
In addition to sailing, participants can enjoy a range of activities, including exploring the charming town of Traverse City, visiting local wineries and breweries, hiking in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, biking along scenic coastal trails, and experiencing the region’s vibrant culinary scene. The nearby Manitou Islands and Leelanau Peninsula offer stunning anchorages and opportunities for adventure.
