LEARN-TO-SAIL LEADER

Richard Darmanin

Captain Richard’s journey with sailing began at the age of eight, navigating the waters off Puerto Rico on a Sunfish. By 16, he was already competing in Hobie Cat races, quickly making a name for himself in the sailing world. His passion and competitive spirit led him to participate in prestigious events such as the inaugural Around Puerto Rico Race and the renowned Middle Sea Race in Malta.

With a lifetime dedicated to the sea, Captain Richard has crewed, captained, and raced both monohulls and catamarans, gaining extensive experience across different sailing disciplines. His expertise and skill earned him the honor of representing Puerto Rico in the 1976 Montreal Olympics, a defining moment in his sailing career. Over the years, his love for exploration has taken him to some of the most beautiful sailing destinations in the world, including the Bahamas, the British Virgin Islands, and Malta.

As an accomplished instructor, Captain Richard is certified by the American Sailing Association (ASA) to teach courses 101, 102, 103, 104, 105, 106, and 114 (Catamaran). His passion for mentoring aspiring sailors and his ability to impart knowledge with clarity and enthusiasm earned him the ASA 2019 Outstanding Instructor Award, a recognition given by his students for his exceptional teaching.

With decades of experience on the water, a competitive sailing background, and a dedication to sharing his knowledge, Captain Richard Darmanin is not just a sailor—he is an inspiration to those who dream of mastering the art of sailing.

Testimonials

Russ and I just got back from our SECOND trip to the BVI’s. We did a flotilla last year there, then a flotilla in the Balerics Islands off Spain last summer. The trip we just returned from was on a 46′ cat with 8 adults. We did it all ourselves, no flotilla. Russ, captain, and me, first mate. We have just YOU to thank. We knew nothing before you. Thank you so much.
