  • 5 Days | 4 Nights

Overview

Your learn-to-sail vacation begins in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where we depart from the city’s well-protected harbor and slip past the breakwater into the open waters of Lake Michigan. From there, we sail north along Wisconsin’s scenic shoreline, making memorable stops in Port Washington, Sheboygan, and other nearby ports of call as conditions and crew goals allow. This “port-to-port” format turns every day into a mini-adventure. Real coastal-style sailing with the comfort of multiple safe harbors close at hand.

Lake Michigan is an ideal classroom because it offers true big-water sailing without the complexity of ocean tides and currents. Expect a mix of conditions that build skill quickly: steady winds that let you practice sail trim and boat handling, and wave patterns that teach timing, balance, and smart decision-making. You’ll learn how to plan a passage, read the weather, manage comfort and safety underway, and enter unfamiliar harbors with calm confidence—skills that transfer anywhere you sail next.

Trade the usual “sit-on-the-beach” getaway for a hands-on sailing vacation on Lake Michigan. Over five days aboard Calypso, a comfortable Jeanneau 409, you’ll learn real-world sailing skills while exploring Milwaukee’s waterfront and the open water just beyond the breakwall. This is a learn-by-doing experience: you’ll take the helm, trim sails, practice maneuvers, and build confidence day by day with coaching tailored to your pace.

You’ll cover the core fundamentals of sailing—points of sail, sail trim, steering to wind and waves, tacking and jibing, basic docking and close-quarters boat handling, anchoring, man-overboard procedures, knot-tying, rules of the road, weather awareness, and safety systems. Expect a smart mix of instruction, practice time, and “this is why it matters” coaching that helps everything click.

Perfect for first-time sailors, couples, or adventurous travelers who want a skill-based vacation, this course blends training with the kind of lake time people come to Lake Michigan for: big-water sailing, fresh air, and sunsets that feel like they were made for a cockpit.

Who it’s for: Beginners and motivated novices (no experience required)
What you’ll leave with: Practical sailing confidence, stronger seamanship, and a week of memories that beat another resort wristband.

Just as important, this trip is designed to feel like a vacation. Each stop offers time ashore to recharge and explore. In Port Washington, enjoy a relaxed waterfront vibe. Perfect for an easy stroll through town after docking, grabbing coffee or ice cream, and soaking up classic Lake Michigan harbor charm. In Sheboygan, you’ll find a lively lakeside scene with great dining options. An ideal place to celebrate the day’s progress, swap stories from the cockpit, and enjoy a well-earned meal before turning in aboard Calypso.

By combining hands-on instruction with beautiful destinations, this route delivers the best of both worlds: serious skill-building on the water, and great lake-town experiences at every port.

  • Harbor entry, docking practice, and securing the boat for the night.
  • Ashore: Port Washington fun
  • Easy walk from the marina area to Coal Dock Park—a peninsula promenade with big Lake Michigan views and access toward South Beach.

  • Sunset option: walk the breakwater/lighthouse area (conditions permitting) or just enjoy golden-hour cockpit time.
  • Approx. distance: ~26 nautical miles (varies with routing).
Day 3
Port Washington → Sheboygan
wednesday june 10, 2026

  • Ashore: Sheboygan highlights
  • Riverfront dining is a big win here—great spots where you can literally watch the waterfront while you eat.
  • Marina comforts: showers, pool/hot tub, and solid amenities can make this feel like a mini resort stop (depending on where we dock).
  • Approx. distance: ~24 nautical miles.
Day 4
Beachy “Gunkhole” Day (Anchorage + Shore Time)
thursday june 11, 2026
  • Theme: The vacation day—slow down, anchor smart, and enjoy dunes + beach energy.
  • This is the day we aim for a laid-back, beach-forward stop—the kind of place you remember when you think “sailing trip.” Because Lake Michigan’s open coastline can be exposed, this day is weather-dependent: Often a good candidate is the shoreline near Kohler-Andrae State Park (just south of Sheboygan) for dunes, beach walks, and that “wild Lake Michigan” feel. Or we can choose an alternate beach stretch with better protection based on the day’s wind and wave angle.
  • We’ll dock comfortably, then do an afternoon beach mission with the crew—same fun, less rolling.
  • On-the-water training focus
    • Anchoring setup (scope, swing, bottom considerations), anchoring etiquette, and how to build a “comfort plan” for wind shifts.
    • Short skills session: heaving-to or reefing practice (conditions permitting), plus a relaxed sail to end the day.
    • Ashore options
    • Kohler-Andrae: dunes, long sandy beach, nature vibe, and easy reset time.
    • Harrington Beach State Park (if we choose a southward beach day): over a mile of beach, hiking, birding, and even public astronomy events at times.
Day 5
Return Passage → Milwaukee + Wrap-Up
friday june 12, 2026
  • Theme: Put it all together—your “captain day,” then a clean finish back in Milwaukee.
  • Morning: final passage plan
  • We’ll look at the marine forecast, pick the safest/most comfortable routing, and assign rotating roles (helm, trim, nav, lookout).
  • Lake Michigan forecasting is straightforward and reliable—great training ground for building good habits.
  • Underway training focus
  • Efficient sail changes, keeping the boat balanced, navigation refresh, and “captain-level” decision making.
  • Arrival: Milwaukee
  • Docking as a team, post-sail debrief, and a skills recap you can take to any boat.

Please Note. This itinerary is meant to serve as an example, however, it is important to note that the actual itinerary is subject to change due to weather conditions or circumstances beyond our control.

DETAILS

What makes this trip different

  • A real cruising experience, not a parking-lot lesson. You’re not circling the same buoy all week—you’re actually going somewhere: Milwaukee → Port Washington → Sheboygan → a sandy anchorage day → Milwaukee.
  • Big-water confidence, without ocean complexity. Lake Michigan gives you true open-water sailing (wind, waves, passage planning) without tides or strong currents, which is perfect for learning fast.
  • Small crew = more helm time. With limited berths, everyone rotates through meaningful roles (helm, trim, nav, docking lines), so no one gets stuck watching from the sideline.
  • You sleep on the boat in cool harbors. That “wake up on the water” vibe is half the magic—and it builds real-world seamanship habits naturally.

Signature moments people remember

  • Sunset sail + harbor lights. An easy evening sail or golden-hour arrival is chef’s kiss on Lake Michigan.
  • The gunkhole day. Anchoring off a beachy shoreline, chilling in the cockpit, swimming (conditions permitting), and doing a barefoot beach walk feels like cruising “for real.”
  • Dock-and-dine nights. Port Washington for a laid-back stroll and treats; Sheboygan for a bigger dinner scene and waterfront energy.
Testimonials

The time spent on and off the water was amazing. Our Captain was fantastic and made the adventure stress-free. We had an amazing sailing vessel, in fantastic shape, and extremely clean. The trip was well laid out, the nights were fun and relaxing as we enjoyed sleeping aboard and looking up at the stars. Sea Safaris did a great job. I’m already planning my trip for next year. Thanks again for organizing and hosting.
