This sailing vacation takes place in Volos, Greece, a gateway to the stunning Sporades Islands—a lesser-known but breathtaking corner of the Aegean Sea. With lush green landscapes, protected waters, and charming island villages, the region offers an ideal environment for learning to sail. June is particularly favorable, with warm temperatures, light to moderate winds, and long daylight hours, allowing for extended time on the water without the strong Meltemi winds that arrive later in the summer.
Sailing conditions are calm and consistent, making Volos perfect for beginners and intermediate sailors building confidence. In addition to hands-on training, participants can enjoy swimming in crystal-clear waters, hiking scenic island trails, and experiencing the rich culture and cuisine of coastal Greece. Fewer crowds during this time of year mean more space to explore—and a more relaxed learning atmosphere.
The Learn-to-Sail Vacation with Whitecaps Sailing School offers ASA 101, 103, and 104 certifications, which are perfect for sailors who already have some basic experience on the water.
¤ ASA 101 | KEELBOAT SAILING 1
¤ ASA 103 | COASTAL CRUISING
¤ ASA 104 | BAREBOAT CRUISING
There are a few options, depending on your current skill level and goals:
¤ ASA 101, 103 & 104 combined
¤ ASA 103 & 104
¤ Or ASA 104 on its own
Arrive in Volos in the late afternoon (~17:00), board your yacht, meet your instructor and crew, and settle in. Then we sail toward the Trikeri Peninsula to anchor overnight in Kottes Bay.
We depart early and make our way to Skopelos, anchoring in Loutraki or docking in the town. Time permitting, hike up to the Agios Ioannis Chapel (the “Mamma Mia” church) or explore local paths.
Sail toward Skopelos Town, stopping en route at Kastani Beach for swimming and relaxation. Enjoy the island’s flavor—try the local Skopelitiki cheesepie.
We head onward to Alonissos, anchoring in the calm harbor of Steni Vala.
Sail into Alonissos National Marine Park, one of Greece’s richest protected areas. Keep an eye out for monk seals and marine life.
Depart Alonissos and head back toward mainland Greece, anchoring in Old Trikeri Bay. That evening, enjoy a farewell dinner ashore.
We cross the Pagasetic Gulf, stopping at Tzasteni Cove for a final swim or break, before making our way into Volos.
Disembark by 09:00. Depart with new skills, new friends, and lifelong memories.

We sail on monohull yachts, typically 42‑ to 49‑foot boats with 4 cabins and 4/3 heads, such as Elan, Beneteau or Bavaria models. These boats are spacious and well‑equipped, making them comfortable for student crews, with enough room for both learning and relaxing. The design of these yachts provides stable sailing characteristics—ideal for practicing maneuvers, sailing close‑hauled, tacking, and reefing.

I recently had the pleasure of taking sailing lessons and becoming captain and my daughter and I couldn’t be more thrilled with the experience, thanks largely to Instructor Belen. Her expertise and passion for sailing were evident from the start, making each session not only informative but incredibly enjoyable. Belen’s teaching style was clear and patient, perfect for both beginners like myself and more seasoned sailors looking to refine their skills. She took the time to ensure we mastered each maneuver and technique. The location itself was stunning, with the azure waters of the Mediterranean providing an ideal backdrop for learning. Thank you Whitecaps sailing for organizing a wonderful experience.
