The New European Travel Visa Program

Understanding the New European Travel Visa Program and Global Travel Visa Requirements

For travelers planning to visit Europe, a new visa requirement is set to take effect. The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is a travel authorization program that will be mandatory for visitors from visa-exempt countries, such as the United States, Canada, and Australia when traveling to the Schengen Area.

These rules will not take effect in the first 6 months of 2025.  Keep an eye on this site for updates:https://travel-europe.europa.eu/etias_en

What is the Shengen Area

The Schengen Area encompasses most EU countries, except for Cyprus and Ireland. Bulgaria and Romania became the newest members of the Schengen Area after the checks on persons at the internal land borders were lifted as of 1 January 2025. Additionally, the non-EU States Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein also have joined the Schengen Area.

How to Obtain an ETIAS Visa

ETIAS authorization

The ETIAS is not a traditional visa but an electronic travel authorization. Travelers must complete an online application, which includes providing personal information, passport details, and answering security questions. The process typically takes about 10 minutes, with most approvals granted within minutes or hours. However, some applications may take up to 30 days for additional review. The ETIAS authorization is valid for three years or until the passport expires. A small fee (approximately €7) applies for applicants between 18 and 70 years old.

Other Countries Requiring Travel Visas

Aside from the ETIAS, various countries have visa requirements for tourists and business travelers. Some notable examples include:

Always check U.S. Department of State for updated visa requirements and travel alerts.
