Day 1

Upon arriving at Hodges Creek Marina in Tortola, students will get acquainted with their new floating “home” and meet their Captain and other program participants (soon to be fast friends). Once settled in, we will have our first boat meeting over a delicious dinner, and set the course for the rest of our adventure.

Days 2-5

After a safety briefing and dedocking lesson, led by the captain, we will raise the sails for the first time and head out into the Sir Francis Drake Channel. As we chart a path for Cooper or Norman Islands, we will have the opportunity to snorkel beautiful reefs or caves, and break into watersports for the first time. The first few days are all about getting to know your crewmates and settling into life onboard.

Days 6-9

By the end of the first week, Captain and Mates will begin to encourage students to take on greater responsibilities for each other and the boat. We will work as a team and hone our leadership skills as we prepare for our first docking at Nanny Cay to reprovision and enjoy a shower on land (boat showers are an experience!). Teamwork abilities will be tested as we compete against other boats in our fleetwide Olympics – a great Sail Caribbean tradition!

Days 10-13

As we approach our third week of the program, we will face our biggest test yet… Challenge Day is always a highlight – it’s the day students are given the opportunity to fully take over the the boat to show off all the skills they have learned. After a Skipper’s meeting in the morning, we will sail to the next destination – taking turns at the helm. Captain and Mates are only along for the ride, so students will have to work together as a crew and rely on each other to make decisions as a team. To celebrate a successful challenge day we will enjoy a BBQ dinner ashore at Strawberries and a DJ dance party with the entire fleet!

Days 11-17

Next, we explore the North Sounds and zip around in Hobie cats at the Bitter End Yacht Club. Then, we’ll practice tacks and navigation as we sail to Anegada – the furthest and most unique destination in the BVI. Explore the island on a staff-led truck tour, pit-stopping at a saltwater pond to spot baby sharks and pink flamingos. At this point, we will have accomplished quite a lot and will be challenged with a competitive Race Day… may the fastest crew win!

Days 18-20

As you we the end of the program, we’ll prepare for our ASA practicals and exams. Afterward, we’ll partake in one last Sail Caribbean tradition: the Chili Cook-off, demonstrating the creativity of each crew and their cooking abilities in the galley. On one of the last days of the program, we’ll wake up at The Baths, a beautiful national park. Here we will snorkel and hike through the boulders, soaking in the beauty of the BVI before the trip home.

Day 21

After a night of celebrating our accomplishments and reminiscing about the journey, we’ll exchange fond farewells and airplane letters before parting ways until next summer!

*Itineraries are subject to change due to weather or other circumstances beyond our control.

Sail Caribbean was two weeks of completely new experiences. This trip gave me more confidence in myself and a broader view of what I can accomplish if I set my mind to it.
