AGES 11-12 | hosted by Sail Caribbean

  • SUMMER 2024: Multiple Dates (see all)
  • 14 Days
  • 101 / 103 / 104

Sail Caribbean is a innovative organization dedicated to offering dynamic sailing programs tailored for adolescents and young adults. Rooted in a passion for sailing and a commitment to holistic growth, Sail Caribbean provides transformative experiences that extend beyond mere nautical skills. Their expertly crafted adventures blend leadership development, environmental awareness, cultural immersion, and pure excitement, shaping resilient, confident, and globally-minded individuals.

Sail Caribbean’s Tango Program is an adventure of a lifetime where, under the guidance and direct supervision of Sail Caribbean’s highly trained staff, students will learn the essentials skills and art of sailing.

The Sailing

The British Virgin Islands offer world-class sailing conditions, beautiful weather, and easy passages – an ideal setting to embark on a journey of skill acquisition and exploration. Each day students will have the opportunity to participate in a 2-4 hour sail from one beautiful location to the next, amongst breathtaking landscapes.

Over the course of fourteen days, students will sail to some of the best spots in the British Virgin Islands, anchor in the same bays that pirates used to call home and explore some of the spectacular coral reefs and untouched cays of the region – all while experiencing the thrill of sailing small boats like Hobie Cats and 26’ Colgates and living aboard a 45-50’ catamaran.

The Tango Program

FOR AGES 11-12

The Tango Program provides fun and adventure for younger students, ages 11-12. It is where many of Sail Caribbean’s  students begin their sailing experience and serves as a gentle introduction to the sport of sailing. In just two weeks, young teens  will become experienced sailors by not just living on and learning to how to care for the boat they will call “home” for two weeks, but also having the opportunity to gain their ASA 101, 103, and 104 certifications.

Under direction of Sail Caribbean’s highly trained staff, these young sailors will gain a passion for sailing and adventure through the curriculum taught. The opportunities to experience and test new skills are endless: students can practice their sailing skills on 26-foot Hobie cats or they can try their hand at skippering Sail Caribbean’s small high-performance keelboats. Each day, students will have the opportunity to participate in a myriad of activities alongside a crew of new friends. Students will learn from Sail Caribbean’s experienced sailing staff and watch their confidence skyrocket.

Sail Caribbean is not just about sailing; it’s about empowering the next generation through unforgettable journeys at sea. Join us for two weeks of unparalleled adventure, learning, and personal growth in one of the world’s most breathtaking destinations.

During this 2 week adventure, students (paired with other individuals within their age group) will live aboard 45-50′ catamarans. Keelboat lessons will take place on a 26′ Colgate.

Day 1

Upon arriving at the airport, Sail Caribbean staff will greet students and accompany them to Hodges Creek Marina on Tortola. Here they will get to meet their fellow crew, Captain, and Mates as they step onboard the yacht they will call “home” for the next two weeks. Next, we will spend some time getting acquainted with the boat and crew as we enjoy a hearty meal and play name games with new friends. Finally, we will enjoy our first wonderful night under the stars as we prepare for an adventurous next two weeks!

Days 2-4

Our first sail across the Sir Francis Drake Channel will be a wild one as Captains and Mates teach the essentials of hands-on sailing. When we arrive at Cooper Island, we will have our first swim in the Caribbean Sea where students can choose to go tubing, get up on the waterskis, or start their ASA certifications on our 26-foot keelboats. Campers can also choose to discover the underwater world by snorkeling or going on a hike on historic Salt Island.

Days 5-7

As our sailing skills continue to develop, putting up the sails and taking the helm will become much easier as the fleet starts to sail further through the British Virgin Islands. Students will have many more opportunities to sail the small keelboats, snorkel, or tube as we navigate around Peter and Norman Islands. We’ll have our first med-anchoring lesson in Little Harbor where friendly turtles and sting rays call their home and learn about squids in a marine biology lesson.

Days 8-10

It is Challenge Day as we head around Tortola to Jost Van Dyke where the natural bubbly pools are a wonderful place to refresh. Campers will completely take over the boats while the Captains and Mates carefully watch the students show off their newfound skills. Afterward, the afternoon is spent on the beautiful Sandy Cay Island for the Olympics. Each crew competes for the gold medal before having a scrumptious dinner at Sidney’s on Jost Van Dyke and heading off to bed before Race Day to Anegada.

Days 11-12

All the campers will wake up with eagerness as today is Race Day: a 4-5 hour sail to Anegada. Anegada is the farthest island in the BVI and has a very flat landscape, making it a challenge to navigate. Upon arrival – or the finish line – campers will head to land to enjoy truck tours around the island. Spotting flamingos, participating in an educational beach clean, and enjoying an ice cream treat are just some of the activities we will appreciate on Anegada.

Days 13-14

Today we wake up to the beautiful landscape of the Baths: a unique and adventurous national park perfect for hiking and snorkeling. Here, we can weave through the large boulders and snorkel the protected coral and large underwater rocks. Cannonball off Jump Rock with friends before returning to the boat for lunch. As we head back to Hodges Creek Marina, we will be ready to show off our learned sailing skills from the past two weeks. We’ll enjoy a hearty dinner together one last time and get ready for awards, skits, and a slideshow to conclude this remarkable program.

*Itineraries are subject to change due to weather or other circumstances beyond our control.

She wanted to make new friends and feel free from the social expectations at school. Sara believed she could be her ‘true self’ on the boat and was happy to be comfortable there.

I think Sail Caribbean is one of the (if not THE) best run outdoor “camping” organizations I’ve ever known. …organization, attention to detail, planning, foresight, experience and stringent attention to safety first and foremost.
